Is it my cup of tea? - Good Time Theatrics - ‘Awakening’ by Daniel Lammin

A play about Moral codes and Teenage recklessness.

Trigger Warning (!!!): This play deals with sensitive material that pertains to issues such as rape, abuse and suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.

This week’s two part edition of ‘Is it my Cup of Tea?’ has us chatting about the subject of teenage hood and the topics of sexual urgencies and growth. The Drama Merchant, Douglas Kennedy and Imogen Saxton get comfy in the tea room this week as they chat to ‘Good Time Theatrics’ theatre company about their Australian adaptation of Frank Wedekind's widely known controversial 1891 play ‘Spring Awakening’.

The story follows Melchior, Moritz and Wendla dealing with the ever so grueling pain of being a teenager on the brink of adulthood, struggling with changing bodies, emotional turmoil and everything else that comes with it. They soon begin to develop strong sexual feelings and other unknown desires that have never before been felt.

Written by Daniel Lammin’s, this 21st century rendition of ‘Spring Awakening’ takes the particulars of the original story and plays with the topics of sexual blossoming, abuse and maturity with an Aussie okka twist. During this week’s podcast the group exchange views and perspectives about the play as well as the directorial choices and concepts behind the show.

They also further discuss with the director and cast on their own personal experience with what it was like tackling such a raw script, and why it is important for modern audiences, especially in today’s times of societal uncertainty for the younger generation. The moral ambiguity surrounding the show is certainly a key note up for much discussion, which is why The Drama Merchant and others are here to question and answer on behalf of creatives and viewers listening wherever you may be!

With themes such as these it is indeed bold of the theatre company to take on Wedekind’s work with a fresh new look on subjects we normally turn away from. Their contemporary take on the piece seems to already grab the eye of many fans of the play and theatre lovers alike (click here for review), with tickets are still available for their season run at HOTA (Home of the Arts)

But will it tickle the fancy of those who have yet to see the show? Will this be an enjoyable and dramatic Aussie cuppa for the local viewers of the Gold Coast? Grab your favourite mug, pour yourself some tea and find out on this week’s edition of ‘Is it my Cup of Tea?’
